Courtallam (Kutralam) is a cluster of waterfalls on the Chittar river in Tenkasi district, where the Western Ghats rise sharply from the plains. For generations, families from across Tamil Nadu have come here in the monsoon months to stand under the falls, as much for the experience as for the scenery.
Courtallam is roughly 500 km from Pondicherry, too far for a comfortable one-day drive. This five-day tour splits the journey with a night in Madurai on the way down and a night in Trichy on the way back, giving you two full days at the falls.
The falls you will visit
The Tenkasi district administration lists several falls within a few kilometres of the town. The ones open to bathing are the core of this trip.
- Main Falls (Peraruvi): next to the bus stand and the Kutralanathar temple, almost 50 m wide, with separate bathing areas for men and women
- Five Falls (Aintharuvi): about 4 km away, where the water divides into five streams
- Old Falls (Pazhaya Kutralam): about 8 km away, with a forested approach regulated by the forest department
- Tiger Falls (Puli Aruvi): about 1 km away, a small fall with a child-friendly bathing area in peak season
- Chitraruvi: a thin fall near the Main Falls, reached on foot
Best time to go
The main season is from about mid-June to September, when the south-west monsoon feeds the falls and light drizzle (saaral) keeps the air cool. The district also lists October to January as a second, less reliable season. The Saral Vizha festival, organised by the district administration, is held during the Tamil month of Aadi (July–August). From February to May the falls can be very thin or dry, and we would not recommend this trip then.
After heavy rain in the hills, the police and forest department close the falls to bathing, sometimes for several days, and reopen them when the flow is safe. These closures are common in peak season. Tell us your dates and we will check the latest situation before you travel, but no one can promise that every fall will be open on a given day.
Temples along the way
The Kutralanathar temple at the Main Falls houses the Chitra Sabha, one of the five halls associated with Nataraja’s cosmic dance; the others include the golden hall at Chidambaram. In Madurai, the Meenakshi Amman Temple and the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal make good use of the overnight stop. On the way home, Srirangam breaks the long drive.
Practical tips for bathing at Courtallam
- Carry a change of clothes, a towel and a plastic bag for wet clothes; changing rooms are available for a small charge
- Remove jewellery and keep phones and wallets in the car or with someone who is not bathing
- Follow police whistles and barricades; the rocks are slippery and the force of water is strong
- Women and men bathe in separate sections at the main falls
- Weekends and holidays in July and August are very crowded; weekdays are easier
- Courtallam sits beside a tiger reserve, so stay on the marked paths and do not wander into the forest
Where you stay
Courtallam has lodges, resorts and guesthouses of all levels, plus more hotels in Tenkasi. Rooms fill fast and rates rise in the peak monsoon months, so book early. We can help you choose hotels in Madurai, Courtallam and Trichy to suit your budget.
