Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari form South India’s best-known pilgrimage triangle, but they also make a satisfying road trip for anyone: a vibrant old temple city, an island at the end of India’s east coast, and the southern tip of the subcontinent where three seas meet. This six-day tour starts in Pondicherry and ends at the airport of your choice, so you do not have to drive all the way back.
You travel with the same driver and car throughout. The long drives are placed on days 1 and 4, with lighter sightseeing days in between.

Why this route
Madurai is the natural gateway to the south, and a full day there avoids rushing the Meenakshi Temple. Rameswaram is visited before Kanyakumari so that Dhanushkodi can be seen in the early morning, when the light is soft and the road is quiet. Ending in Kanyakumari puts you just 90 km from Trivandrum airport, which usually has good flight connections, instead of facing a 580 km drive back to Pondicherry.
If you prefer to return by road, we add a night on the way back and break the journey at Madurai or Trichy.
Best season
October to March is the most comfortable period. From October to December the northeast monsoon can bring heavy rain to Rameswaram and temporarily close the Dhanushkodi road or the Kanyakumari ferries. April to June is hot but generally dry. Sunrise at Kanyakumari is clearest on winter mornings; clouds can hide it in the monsoon.

Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi: what to expect
Rameswaram is a small, busy pilgrim town, and the Ramanathaswamy Temple is its centre. Its outer corridors, lined with tall carved pillars, are among the longest of any Hindu temple. Dhanushkodi, at the tip of the island, was a thriving port town until the cyclone of December 1964 destroyed it; today you see the ruins of a church, a railway station and houses standing in the sand. The road beyond to Arichal Munai runs between two seas and ends at a small memorial, with Sri Lanka not far across the strait. There are few facilities, so carry water and snacks, and swim only where local people say it is safe.
Temple dress code and packing
Wear traditional or modest clothes at all the temples. At the Kanyakumari Bhagavathy Temple men are required to remove shirts and vests before entering. At Rameswaram, if you take the theertham bath, bring a full change of clothes and a plastic bag for the wet ones. From September 2026, Tamil Nadu’s temple administration has directed major temples to stop devotees carrying mobile phones inside, with deposit counters at the gates, so plan to leave phones with the driver or at the counter. Pack sunscreen, a hat and a light jacket for the windy ferry ride.

From Pondicherry, six days is comfortable, with a full day in Madurai and Kanyakumari each. Five days is possible if you skip the Madurai sightseeing day.
Is the Vivekananda Rock ferry open every day?
Ferries run daily in daylight hours but are suspended in rough seas and on some special occasions. Check timings locally on the day; expect queues in peak season.
Can we end the tour at an airport?
Yes. Most guests end at Trivandrum airport, about 90 km from Kanyakumari, or Madurai airport. A drop back in Pondicherry can be arranged with an extra night on the way.
Is this tour suitable for senior citizens?
Yes. The daily pace is relaxed apart from two long drives, and the car stops at each site. The ferry at Kanyakumari has steps to board, which staff help with.
