Silver Cascade, also called Velli Aruvi, is the waterfall that greets almost everyone driving up to Kodaikanal from the plains. It sits right beside the main ghat road from Batlagundu and Madurai, about 8 km below the town, so you do not need to trek or even walk far: the car stops, and the falls is in front of you.
Tamil Nadu Tourism describes it as more than 180 feet (about 55 m) high. The water comes from the overflow of Kodaikanal Lake, which runs downhill from the town and spills over a steep, stepped rock face in several white streams.

What to expect
This is a quick, easy stop rather than an outing in itself. A small viewing area faces the falls, with a cluster of stalls selling tea, snacks, fruit and souvenirs along the roadside. Most visitors spend 20 to 40 minutes taking photos and stretching their legs after the long climb up the ghat.
Because it is on the main road, the stop gets crowded in peak season and on weekends, and parking along the narrow road can be slow. Our drivers know where to pull in safely and will wait while you look around.
When the falls looks its best
Like the lake that feeds it, Silver Cascade depends on rain. It is most impressive during and after the monsoon rains, roughly June to December, when the full width of the rock face is covered. In the dry months before the summer rains, the flow can drop to a few thin streams.
Kodaikanal’s main tourist season is April to June, when the plains are hot; the falls will still be worth a stop then, but don’t expect the volume you see in the wet months.
Safety and etiquette
- Monkeys: bonnet macaques gather around the stalls and parked cars. Keep food out of sight, close car windows and don’t feed them.
- Wet rocks: the rocks at the base are slippery and the water arrives with force after rain. Stay in the viewing area and follow any barricades or notices.
- Traffic: this is a busy ghat road. Watch children closely and cross carefully; buses and cars come round the bends quickly.
- Litter: carry your plastic and food wrappers back to the car.
Making it part of your Kodaikanal trip
Since it lies on the main road, the simplest plan is to stop on the way up or on the way down. If you arrive late in the day after a long drive, it can be nicer to stop on the way back, when you are fresh. In town, the lake, Bryant Park, Coaker’s Walk and Pillar Rocks fill a day or two, and there are other falls in the hills around Kodaikanal for a fuller waterfall circuit.
Visiting from Pondicherry
Kodaikanal is about 398 km from Pondicherry, around 8 to 9 hours by road, usually via Trichy and Dindigul and then up the Batlagundu ghat, which passes Silver Cascade. Our Kodaikanal hill holiday includes the stop with a car and driver. For more cool-weather trips, see our hill stations and waterfalls pages.
