The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, also called the Vembanad Bird Sanctuary, is a 14-acre stretch of wooded wetland on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake in Kumarakom, about 14 km west of Kottayam. It is small, flat and easy to visit – a shaded walk through mangrove-like woodland and canals, ending at a watchtower over the lake.
For anyone staying in Kumarakom for the backwaters, it is the obvious early-morning outing before the heat and the houseboat traffic build up.

From rubber estate to sanctuary
The land was once a rubber plantation developed by an Englishman, George Alfred Baker, and was long known as Baker’s Estate. Over time the plantation turned back into dense waterside woodland that birds use for roosting and nesting. Today the sanctuary is run by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC).
What you see on the trail
A cobbled path of roughly 2 km leads from the entry counter through thick woods, past overhanging roots and over small canals, to an observation tower at the far end. From the top you look across the canopy and out over Vembanad Lake. The walk takes about an hour at a birdwatcher’s pace; allow longer if you stop often.
Resident birds are easy to see along the way: cormorants, Oriental darters, egrets, herons, moorhens, kingfishers, woodpeckers, koels, owls and brahminy kites. The canals and lake edge are good for waterfowl.
You can also see the sanctuary from the water. A boat ride along the boundary of the sanctuary on the lake shore is a good way to watch birds on the water’s edge; boats can be arranged in Kumarakom, and many visitors combine this with a backwater cruise.
Seasons
- November to February: the migratory season, when teals, gulls, terns, marsh harriers and other winter visitors arrive. The weather is also at its most pleasant.
- June to August: the nesting season of resident water birds such as cormorants, darters, egrets and moorhens. It is wet and green, but heavy rain and high water can restrict parts of the trail.
- March to May: hot and humid; fewer birds, so go very early.
Timings and tickets
At the time of writing, the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) Kottayam lists the sanctuary as open every day from about 6:30 AM to 5 PM, with tickets sold only at the gate. Children pay a reduced rate. Hours and fees change, so check with DTPC Kottayam or at the counter before you go.
Tips
- Be there at opening: birds are most active, and the path coolest, in the first two hours.
- Mosquito repellent: the woodland is damp and shaded – bring repellent and wear light long sleeves.
- Footwear: the path can be muddy and slippery after rain; wear shoes with grip.
- Binoculars: much of the action is in the canopy, so binoculars make a big difference.
- Silence: keep voices low and phones on silent along the trail.
Visiting from Pondicherry
