If you want to see the great temples of Tamil Nadu but only have four days, this is the route to take. It links the Chola heartland around Thanjavur with Trichy‘s island temple of Srirangam and ends in Madurai, the old Pandya and Nayak capital that grew around the Meenakshi Temple.
Each day has one main drive of two to four hours, with the sightseeing arranged around temple opening times – mornings and evenings for darshan, midday for palaces and museums or rest.
Who this tour is for
First-time visitors to South India who want the classic temple circuit, pilgrims who want darshan at Srirangam and Meenakshi, and families who like architecture and history. The only climb is the Rock Fort, with a few hundred rock-cut steps, which can be skipped.

Why this route
The towns are strung along a line running south-west from Pondicherry, so the route moves steadily away from the coast and never doubles back until the final day. Placing Thanjavur’s Big Temple in the evening of day 1 and the Meenakshi Temple in the evening of day 3 lets you see both during their liveliest hours, with lamps lit and rituals under way.
The Chola temples of Thanjavur and Darasuram also make a good contrast with Srirangam and Madurai, where most of what you see – the huge gopurams and pillared halls – was built later, under the Vijayanagara and Nayak rulers.
Best season
October to March is the most pleasant time. Madurai’s Chithirai festival (April–May) re-enacts the wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar and is spectacular but very crowded; Vaikunta Ekadasi (December–January) draws huge crowds to Srirangam. Summer is hot in all three towns, so we plan outdoor sightseeing for mornings and evenings.

Srirangam and Madurai in more detail
The Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam is one of the largest functioning Hindu temple complexes in the world, with seven concentric enclosures and 21 gopurams. The outer enclosures hold streets of houses and shops, so you walk through a living town before reaching the shrine; the tall southern Rajagopuram was completed only in 1987. Madurai’s Meenakshi Temple, by contrast, is dedicated jointly to the goddess Meenakshi and her consort Sundareswarar, and its gopurams are covered with thousands of brightly painted figures. The Hall of a Thousand Pillars houses a small art museum with a separate ticket at the time of writing.
In Thanjavur, the Maratha Palace complex is worth an unhurried hour: the art gallery holds one of the finest collections of Chola bronzes in the state, and the Saraswathi Mahal Library preserves palm-leaf manuscripts and old maps.
Temple dress code and tips
Dress modestly for all the temples: dhoti, trousers or long skirts, and covered shoulders. Footwear is left outside. Mobile phones are not allowed inside the Meenakshi Temple at the time of writing, and deposit counters are available at the entrances; rules at other temples vary, so the driver will advise. At Srirangam, non-Hindus can usually visit the outer enclosures but not the sanctum. Carry water, a small towel and socks for hot stone floors.

How many days are needed for Thanjavur, Trichy and Madurai?
Four days from Pondicherry is comfortable: one night each in Thanjavur, Trichy and Madurai, with the return drive on the last day. Three days is possible if you skip the palace museums.
Are mobile phones allowed in the Meenakshi Temple?
At the time of writing, mobile phones are not permitted inside the Meenakshi Amman Temple, and paid deposit counters are available near the gates. Rules can change, so check on arrival.
