This six-day tour links the two best-known holiday regions west of Pondicherry: the Nilgiri hills, with Ooty and its quieter neighbour Coonoor, and the royal city of Mysore across the border in Karnataka. Between them lies one of the most scenic forest drives in South India, through the Mudumalai and Bandipur tiger reserves.
It is a road trip in a private car with one driver throughout. The first and last days are long drives, so the middle four days are kept relaxed.
Who it suits
Families with children, couples and groups who enjoy cool weather, gardens, a vintage train ride and a bit of wildlife spotting from the car, followed by palaces and history. Senior travellers manage it well if they are comfortable with a full day in the car at each end of the trip; we can split the first day with a night in Salem or Mettupalayam.

Why this route
Stopping first at Coonoor means the long first day ends a little lower and earlier than Ooty, and it lets you ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway uphill to Ooty the next day. The railway, opened in 1908 and added to UNESCO’s Mountain Railways of India site in 2005, is India’s only operating rack railway, climbing from Mettupalayam through Coonoor to Ooty.
Leaving Ooty through the forests to Mysore avoids retracing the Mettupalayam road, and ending in Mysore puts you three hours from Bangalore’s airport and railway station if you do not want the long drive back.
Best season
October to June is the main season. April and May are peak months, with Ooty’s flower show at the Botanical Garden usually held in May – expect crowds and higher hotel rates. Tourist vehicles registered outside the Nilgiris need a Tamil Nadu e-pass to enter the district, with daily caps in peak months; we apply for it for your car and check the current rules before you travel. December and January bring cold nights and sometimes frost. The southwest monsoon (June–September) makes the hills green but wet, with occasional landslips on ghat roads. Mysore is at its most festive during Dasara (September–October).

Tips for the toy train
The Coonoor–Ooty section takes a little over an hour, and the full Mettupalayam–Ooty run, with steam engines on the steepest stretch, takes around five hours. Reservations open in advance through IRCTC and sell out quickly in holidays and weekends, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. If seats are not available, the car follows the same road up the hill.
What to pack
Warm clothes for the Nilgiris – a sweater or fleece in any season and a heavier jacket from November to February – plus a rain jacket from June to September. Comfortable shoes, sunglasses and motion-sickness tablets for the Kalhatti ghat. For the Chamundeshwari and Srirangapatna temples, dress modestly. Keep the car windows up and do not stop to feed or approach animals on the forest road.
