Doddabetta, “big hill” in Kannada and Badaga, is the highest point of the Nilgiri Mountains. Wikipedia gives its height as 2,637 metres (about 8,650 feet), while the Nilgiris district administration lists 2,623 metres; either way it is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu and the third highest in South India after Anamudi and Meesapulimala in Kerala.
Unlike many summits, you do not have to climb it. A road leads off the Ooty–Kotagiri road to a car park just below the top, about 9 to 10 km from Ooty, so the peak is an easy outing for families and older travellers.

What you see from the top
On a clear day the view takes in the rolling Nilgiris in every direction: Ooty town spread across its valley, the Ketti valley, the Avalanche area and ridge after ridge fading into the distance. The district administration describes Doddabetta as standing where the Western and Eastern Ghats meet.
Clouds often sweep across the summit, especially from late morning and through the monsoon, and the view can vanish completely for a while. Patience usually pays off; the mist moves quickly.
The telescope house
At the summit stands a telescope house run by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC). It opened in 1983 and has public telescopes through which you can look across to Ooty and the surrounding hills. The building has windows all round, which is welcome on a cold, windy day. How much you see through the telescopes depends entirely on the weather.
Forest and nature
The upper slopes of Doddabetta are a good place to see the typical vegetation of the high Nilgiris: dense patches of shola forest in the hollows, stunted rhododendron trees and grassland with sub-alpine shrubs and herbs. Take a few minutes away from the crowds near the car park to look at it. Keep to the marked paths and do not pick plants.
Best time and practical tips
The clearest views come early in the morning in the drier months, roughly October to May. April and May are Ooty’s busiest months, when queues of vehicles can build up on the approach road, so go early. During the south-west monsoon (June to September) the summit is often wrapped in cloud.
- Dress warmly: the top is several degrees colder and much windier than Ooty town.
- Monkeys: keep food out of sight near the car park and stalls.
- Short walk: from the parking area it is a short uphill walk to the summit; take it slowly at this altitude.
- Check on the day: access and timings can change in peak season or bad weather, so ask locally before you drive up.
Visiting from Pondicherry
Ooty is about 430 km from Pondicherry, around 9 hours by road via Salem, Coimbatore and Mettupalayam. Doddabetta is usually combined with the Ooty Lake, the botanical garden and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway on a two- or three-day stay. Our Ooty, Coonoor and Mysore tour includes the peak with a car and driver. See our hill stations page for more ideas.
