The coast south of Pondicherry was once shared by several European trading powers. The Danes held Tranquebar (Tharangambadi) for more than two centuries, and Karaikal was a French settlement that is still part of the Union Territory of Puducherry. A little further south, Velankanni draws pilgrims of all faiths to its Marian basilica.
This two-day tour links the three along the coast, with one night on the way. It suits travellers who like quiet towns, colonial history and the sea more than a packed sightseeing list.
Tranquebar: a Danish town by the sea
In 1620 the Danish East India Company obtained land here from the Nayak ruler of Thanjavur, and Admiral Ove Gjedde built Fort Dansborg on the beach. The Danes sold Tranquebar to the British in 1845. The fort, now looked after by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology, houses a small museum; at the time of writing it opens from mid-morning to late afternoon and is reported to close on Fridays, so check before you go.
Tranquebar is also where the Lutheran missionary Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg worked in the early 1700s. The Zion Church, consecrated in 1701, is described as the oldest Protestant church in India, and the New Jerusalem Church of 1718 holds Ziegenbalg’s grave. At the end of the street, the Masilamani Nathar temple, first built in 1306, stands right at the water’s edge and has been partly restored after sea damage.
Karaikal
Karaikal is a quiet port town with a long beach and a relaxed promenade. The Karaikal Ammaiyar temple honours the woman saint Karaikal Ammaiyar, one of the 63 Nayanmars, whose Tamil hymns are among the earliest in Shaiva devotional literature. Nearby Thirunallar has the Dharbaranyeswarar temple, known for its Saneeswaran (Saturn) shrine; it can be extremely crowded on Saturdays and during Sani Peyarchi, the Saturn transit festival.
Velankanni Basilica
The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health grew from local traditions of Marian apparitions in the 16th century and a story of Portuguese sailors saved from a storm. It was raised to the status of a minor basilica in 1962. The white Gothic-style church is visited by people of many faiths, and the annual feast from 29 August to 8 September brings very large crowds. Dress modestly and follow the shrine’s rules on photography inside the church.

Temple and church etiquette
Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees at the Velankanni Basilica, the Thirunallar temple and the Nagore Dargah. Footwear is removed at temple entrances and at the dargah. Photography is usually restricted inside sanctums and during services, so ask before you take pictures.
Best time to go
December to March is the most pleasant time on this coast. October and November bring the northeast monsoon, with heavy rain and occasional cyclone warnings, when the beaches may be closed. If you want to avoid crowds at Velankanni, skip the late-August to early-September feast and major Christian holidays; if you want to experience the feast, book your hotel well ahead.
