Tour highlights

  • The stone chariot and carved halls of the Vittala temple
  • Virupaksha temple, still in worship, and its tall eastern gopuram
  • Sunrise or sunset over the ruins from Hemakuta hill
  • The royal centre: Mahanavami platform, stepped tank, Lotus Mahal and elephant stables
  • Boulder landscapes along the Tungabhadra river
  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed since 1986

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire from the 14th century until 1565, when the city was sacked after the Battle of Talikota. What survives is a vast landscape of temples, palaces, water tanks and markets among granite boulders on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

Hampi is about 650 km from Pondicherry, so this tour breaks the journey with a night in Bengaluru each way and gives you two nights at Hampi itself. You travel in a private car with the same driver throughout.

Who this tour suits

History lovers, photographers and anyone who enjoys walking among ruins. Hampi involves a lot of walking on uneven stone paths in strong sun, and some sites are a climb. The car can take you close to most monuments, but not all the way, so a reasonable level of fitness helps. The long drives on days two and four are on national highways, broken with meal stops.

Route at a glance

  • Pondicherry → Tiruvannamalai → Krishnagiri → Bengaluru: about 315 km
  • Bengaluru → Tumakuru → Chitradurga → Hosapete → Hampi: about 340 km
  • Hosapete → Hampi: about 13 km
  • Hampi → Bengaluru → Pondicherry: the same route back over two days

The Vittala temple

The Vittala temple complex dates from the 15th century and was enlarged in the early 16th century under Krishnadevaraya. Its best-known feature is the stone chariot in the courtyard – a small shrine to Garuda built in the shape of a temple car, now pictured on India’s 50-rupee note. The main hall is known for its slender carved pillars, which give off musical notes when struck; to protect them, tapping is no longer allowed. Go at opening time for soft light and fewer people.

Tips for exploring Hampi

  • Hire a licensed local guide for at least one day – the site is large and the stories behind the ruins make much more sense with one
  • Keep your monument ticket with you all day – at the time of writing, a ticket bought at one ticketed site has also been valid for some of the others on the same day
  • Virupaksha is a working temple: dress modestly and leave footwear outside
  • Carry water, a hat and sunscreen; there is little shade among the ruins
  • Monument timings and ticket rules change – check before you go

Best season

October to February is the best time to visit, with dry days and cooler mornings. From March to May, daytime temperatures are very high, so sightseeing is only practical early and late in the day. The monsoon months (June to September) bring some rain and greener surroundings, and the Tungabhadra may run high. The state-run Hampi Utsav festival is held on dates announced each year.

Customising the tour

  • Add a third night at Hampi to visit Anegundi across the river or the Tungabhadra dam
  • Add Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal with extra nights
  • Start and end in Bengaluru if you fly in
  • Combine with Mysore or Coorg on a longer Karnataka trip
  • Hotels and guesthouses in budget, standard or premium categories

Where to stay

Hosapete, about 13 km away, is the nearest town and has the widest choice of hotels. Kamalapura, on the southern edge of the ruins, puts you close to the royal centre, and there are smaller guesthouses near Hampi Bazaar. Staying close to the site makes early starts easier, which matters here because the best light and the coolest hours are just after sunrise. We can help you book a hotel that suits your budget.

What to pack

Light, loose cotton clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temple visits, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Wear sturdy walking shoes with a good grip – the granite can be smooth and slippery – but choose ones that are easy to slip off at temple entrances. Carry a refillable water bottle and some snacks, as food options are limited inside the ruins.
